Mike Martens
1961 900B
Mike just bought this 1961 Seagrave 900B Canopy Cab Pumper this May. It was showing 3880 miles on the odometer when he picked it up in Hartford, CT. It has a 1973 Detroit Diesel 6-71 in it, with 274 hours showing. Recently the brakes, driveline and axle seals were replaced. 6 new Goodyear steel belted radials were also placed on the rig.
Mike stated just fueled it up, hopped in it, and drove it 564 miles straight through to his home in Seville, OH. It took 12 hours at a governed speed of 60 mph and got 6 -7 miles per gallon. Mike's only problem was a thrown fan belt.
Mike says that it seems to have a lot of equipment on it including the deluge gun and everything works. Mike has added the cowl mounted search light and a few other new owner touches. He also adds it could use some paint and some of the chrome could be re-done, but he's not in a big rush to start doing things to it because it still looks pretty good at "parade distance".
"One of my earliest memories is fighting with my little friend Dave when we were about 3 to see who got to "drive" his fire truck pedal car with the wooden ladders and who got stuck with my fire chief pedal car with the bell. Now I get to drive a fire truck with wooden ladders and the bell", Mike said.
